What the heck are Bass traps?
That seems to be beyond my realm of understanding
Are we talking a particular HZ?

behind the board in a spare bedroom...
Thanks in advance

They're basically just big low frequency absorber, pretty much in the below 200Hz range somewhere.

By putting them in corners or along walls were you can hear bass responce anomolies (a huge increase in low frequency responce) you absorb the wave at it's reflective point and reduce the problem. You can really even out your bass responce that way.

Any large, padded object will do (with varying success): apoulstry, mattresses, pets, high density foam in a 2X4 frame...

The expensive traps just give you a known amount of absorbtion at a particular frequency so it's easier to get it right.

Hmm... I guess I could glue the cats in one corner. maybe the dog in the other. I don't think the parakeets will be of much use though.

Dave,

For a good overview of bass traps and other acoustic treatment, see the Acoustics FAQ, second in the list on my Articles page:

Wow... I am most likely going to go and do that, Ethan! Amazing. My brother always knew it could be done this way...
