Are the electrics safe in my studio?

I have a small studio and I share it with someone else. We are worried that the elecetrics might now be safe because we're overpowering them.

Can anyone tell me what is the maximum wattage you can suck out of one plug socket before it gets dangerous? And what are the dangers?

Cheers

most household recepticles are rates at 20 amps....thats on a 12/2 wire......this means that on a 20 amp breaker....the circuit will open at the breaker within 80% of your max load........some state let you wire 120 volt recepticles and switch legs for lights with 14/2 wire...which is only good for 15 amps.....don't go looking at the data plates on your gear for wattage....look for how many amps it draw.....use your head and do the math and you'll be ok

220VAC, I assume?
If you know what the breaker ratings are per circuit, you can calculate current to maintain a safe load. Just add the current draw of each device on the same circuit, as per jpw23s' advice.
