I'm doing an overhaul. I'm gonna be using my YSMp1s and my 1029As in the Control Room. I'm looking at buying subs for both.
I have a recording desk and I wanted to place the subs behind the desk, between the speakers. My currently design has the consumer 5.1 sub that came with my desktop below the desk, the YSMp1 sub behind it and the 1029A sub on top of the YSMp1 sub, like so: ..................... . YSS1 . .7050B (Below). . . ...................... .................................................. ............... . . . . . Desk . . Dell Sub (Below Desk) . . . .................................................. ............... The other options I thought of would be to place them all beside each other behind the desk, OR . . . could one sub be used to all application? Also, if I were to go for the set up I have planed, should I have some kiind of stand for each unit to sit on. I've noticed Sound Anchors has sub stands. One more: should subs be placed directly on the ground for optimum performance? Sorry, I know that's a lot, I'm somewhat new to all this low end stuff. All the best, Ian

Some of my favorite photos in a magazine are where the Sound On Sound guys are doing a Studio Rescue, and they're crawling around on the floor, hands & knees, "looking" for the best place to put the sub, using their ears. They put the sub in the chair by the intended user's monitoring position, and then crawl around until they "hear" the sub the best sounding. They then put the sub in that location, and go sit in the chair and check themselves. Now, as to whether or not that works, I don't know, as I've never done that. However, if you'd care to part with one of your subs, I'll give it a go, and let you know how I get on with it... tic lolol

Ian, subs...I like Italian btw lol...seriously all subs, and bass instruments are 360 degree sound inforcement...meaning they don't actually shoot out of the front of speakers, some people like them under their butts so they can feel the pressure, the more common method is under the desk, but you can put them behind you, guess it depends on what you like....that being said, all you really need is one good 'un, crank it up, and send the other to jmail for inspection *smile*

The subs are on the way. I've sent one to both of you. It seems that most people agree with placing the sub in the engineering chair and searching for the sweet spot.

Hmmm... I just found a little sticky on the front door from the Post Office that says, in effect: "We were unable to deliver your package today, as it was too big to fit in your mailbox. It will now be returned to the sender. Thank you, and remember: postal rates increase the day after Mother's Day. Mail your package early..."

Something to consider with subs - cheap subs have nastly little harmonics in the mid region and DO cause them to loose their omnisence (is that the right word?) in the room; meaning you will be able to hear where its coming from.
When I set mine up I did the crawl around found the spot under the desk that seemed to be best (which is about 2 inches right of center). Then I used a rat shack spl meter and played pink noise through the 2.1 and had someone calibrate the gain till it sounded right between all speakers in the listening position. Then I had someone play some nice bassy synth notes in succession to make sure that notes sounded even and nothing stood out. If you have not already done so, treat your room. Add at least 4 more bass traps than you already have. I have 6 now and am adding 4 more this weekend (if my shipment arrives)

That's weird. I used the new USPS "Just add water" Service which shrinks packages by 90%. I'm definitely getting my money back. I |
