proposed studio layout

Here is the plan view of my basement/studio with two locations where the workstation may go. Anyone see that one location may be preferrable to the other, or acoustic treatment suggestions?

How much are you planning on building out?
I would orient my main mixing area on the left wall where the drums are, so that the monitors are firing towards the door. and use the area where the second DAW is for the drum tracking area.

That will be it as far as construction, so there won't be any walls built to separate the space(if that's what you meant).

Are you deadset on no more construction? That utility room is where I'd build a drum room.
With a 20 x 23 space you may want to think about 2 or more spaces: at least one for tracking and one for mixing.

Perhaps my floor plan will inspire ya...

Yeah Shane, I would love to section off the space like you've done, but I don't plan on being in this house too much longer so I don't want to go all out. I also have to make it uncramped and aesthetically pleasing for my lady .

Cool, then what DC said is the way to go. Get your DAW as far away from early reflections as possible. Hope your ceiling isn't too low. That can color your sound.

Here's one way you might set it up.

This way you get your speakers fireing the long way, you'll want to put some treatment on the left wall and bass bass traps in the corners.

Ahh, now I see what you are saying. Posistion the listening enviroment so as to avoid as many reflections as possible and then treat the remainder of potential problems, correct? I like it, thanks. And thanks for the cool couch as well .

hey phil I got the layouts, I like the second one dc suggested, keeping the drum area by the stairs away from the mix console. one other suggestion since you don't want to do any partition work in the space is build a couple (2) GOBOS I use them in my studio and they work real well in getting some sound seperation especially around drums. I built mine out of 2X4 framing, covered with mahogany (floor)underlayment, stuff with some corning fiber glass batts (701?ithink) and seal all inside edges real good, 4'X6'size with some legs and wheels to move around, paint to match decor, plus when ya move you can take them with you. I have a seperate drum room, but some bands like to record live and gobos help out alot in this situation.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had thought of that, but I don't think I would track more than one instrument at a time. However, I was wondering, besides being helpful with isolation, could mobile partitioning be useful for tracking, ie creating different room sizes or deadening the area immediatly surrounding the drums, amps, etc.?

yep Vulcan....that's where I got my original plans for my gobos, back when they were just starting Real Trapps, Ethan had (has) plans for the gobos', its been along time, so dunno if they are still there. spam I have found them very effective isolating amps, and drums from the recordings, there is of course bleed through, but nothing like with-out them. The real trapps are very nice units, may consider them.
