converting aiff files into wav files ?

Hi

I am new here and to audio as well.

I use a Fostex FR2 field recorder to get audio into my Macs to use in my video work, I latter burn into DVD's.
FR2 generates broadcast wav files which I think are lighter and so, better to use in FCP video projects, than aiff files.
As means of back up I use to record this audio into CD-R's, but there, the same files appear as aiff...
Is this what should happen ? and if it is so can I convert this aiff files into wav files again ?

Can someone please help ?

It happens because a Mac thinks all sound files are aiff's (it's native format).

Doesn't matter. An .aiff and a .wav are identical data.

If you have to you can always open it up in any audio editor (Audacity is free) and save them as a .wav. You could probably just rename them to .wav also.

about sound files in FCP

Thank you Tim !

I was worried about it because I read in a video discussion forum, someone advising against using aiff files when burning FCP projects to DVD, due their wehigt.

Can you please comment on this ?

At same rate/bit depth, actual sound data is strictly the same between wav and aiff.
(hence, same weight). aiff stores additional information such as loop point in its header.

Cool

Both are uncompressed formats, only the header information is different.

FCP wants to see .aif it's the native Mac format.
