Need advices - Home Studio built in progress

Hello everyone,

I'm building my home studio right now and I need advices / recommendations.

First of all, I know a very little about studio design. The studio is built in my basement and I have no other options for now

I'm running on a limited budget and I want to do everything by myself. I'm realistic about the results, I know it won't be perfect but I would like your help to make it better.

This will give you an idea of the basement.

What I have done so far:

- Empty the entire place and clean everything.

- Placed 2x4 on all the wall so I can drill "SonoPad" on it.

- Build a small wall to separate the mixing room from the rest of the storage area.

- Cover all the walls and doors (Mixing / Control Room & Recording Booth) with "SonoPan".

My plan for the next phase was:

- Place SonoPad or something in all the 90 degrees angle corners.

- Do something (not sure what yet, foam, mat, or else) on the ceiling. Look at what it is right now:

- Paint everything so I won't get sick when working.

- Get some mat for both rooms.

- Full the "other side" of the wall that separate the mixing room from the rest of the storage area with some construction whool and close the wall with wood.

- Build 2 movable walls to place in the booth so I can play with the space as I need it.

I know it's not the ideal setup but if you guyz have any comments that can help me out I will appreciate.

I'm new to all this and I would like to have a decent place to work.

Thank you for reading this, and thanks for your time.

since you don't have a high ceiling, I would suggest using a thick carpet for the floor. It will add value to your house, look nicer, and more importantly it will help with the sound reflection, especially with the bass.

I would make the ceiling like an office. Most office buildings have an acoustical panel ceiling anyway. It will look nice, is easy to do and will sound better.

This is where I am now with my project.

I will do some sound test this weekend for the control room. After I will attack the recording room. Any ideas / comments / suggestion are more than welcome.

Looking good,
I would suggest, loose the newspaper as that is an extreme fire hazard.

Also some hardwood flooring here and there may be usfull, as you do not want the recording and tracking room totally dead.

The way I have mine set up is hard wood, (laminate), flooring, sheetrock, popcorn ceiling and some walls with partial auralex, and some carpet under the room.

There is no reflections, but it still sounds live.

My 2 cents.

Yes, lose the newspaper. You will get a buzzing noise from the paper vibrating against the wall at certain frequencies unless you glue it like wallpaper. That would be really messy.

If you are looking to give your walls some decoration, hang a wall mural or some wall panels. Make sure you alternate smooth and rough surfaces to diminish the reflections. Boppers setup looks like it has good acoustics.

I made the mistake ages ago with my first sound room by putting carpet in the entire room. It was quiet...too quiet. Not to mention against building codes. (That was just a side note regarding fire hazards).

Another suggestion came to mind, you could alternate mirror tiles with foam tiles. I've seen that in a few studios and I like it. Thought about doing that myself when I build my next recording room.
