Subwoofer Crackling
First post here...of many I suppose!
I just calibrated a live system with two independent front of houses, one on the first floor of the venue and the other one on the second. The front of house speakers are Tannoy PowerV15 and the sub of the first floor is a Tannoy VS18DR. My actual issues is with the sub, I´m powering it from a QSC 1450 in bridged mode, so according to specs I should expect 800W @ 8 Ohms, and the subs specs, says that it can handle from 600W to 1200W in program operation. However, I have the sub limited from 50-70Hz and I have it limited at -6dB at the dbx because after that it starts to make a crackling noise, I assume it is excess excursion of the 18" driver. If I´m right, shouldn´t this driver take the whole power from the amp?, the amp is not limiting by the way. How can I test this a bit further? what recommended tests should I do in order to take out the most of the sub? The system sounds beautiful, but the lowend is missing some presence and punch, and when I drive ths sub at low levels it sound georgeos....any ideas? Thanks in advance! Kaiowas |

it sounds like the voice coil has bottomed out. it bends the back end of the voice coil so when you turn up the sub and it begins to extend - the crackling could actually be rubbing...my best guess

I know you said the ground was good but did you pop it off and make sure it is a CLEAN connection to the chassis? It could be bad preouts on the head unit...happened to me once...needed to send unit back to manufacturer and repair. If possible test his head unit with your system, I know it is a PIA but it would rule out the stuff you really can't fix on your own. Good Luck!
