Wiring !!! Scary stuff!!!

Wiring has always been my phobia for guitars.

The more I do it, the more I need to learn.

Today, I decided to first of all, figure out this 2 pole 6 position rotary switch.

First thing was to find out how the sucker works; so I went on the internet, and got all kinds of irrelevant info.

Why not do continuity tests along the contacts, I think.

How? buy a continunity testor?, no way Hos'e.

I grabbed my trusty 'behind the rack' flashlight and modified it to test this amazing little rotary switch.

Easy to do, and you should have somthing to test signal flow anyhoots.

I have a fancy wire tester buried somewheres, but in all honesty, if a cable does not work, outside of a visible broken solder connection, it gets tossed or used for trunk rope.

So here is how you make one.

Pix should cover it, plus you still have a flashlight as well...

Neck and Bridge setup for wiring

So I tested the positions of the rotary switch for continuity and found the correct contacts.

i am planning on using one tone control for the single coils and one for the "mini rail' in the middle.

the Fender fat strat runs a hummer at bridge, which is cool. I guess.

I wish to run the hummer in the middle, so I play with phase between the two single coils.

I also plan on testing circuits for output along the way...

I am no electronics guy whats so ever, but I can learn the basics, or attempt it perhaps.

Here is where I am at so far, the single pups will send output from Pole 1, hummer from pole 2, that way, (I think), I can keep the bleed seperate from the seperate tone pots.

I will give you all a nice diagram once I figure it out

Squares are pole 2; circles are pole 1 for reference.

Thanks again for playin...

Wiring, and why most folks tell you nothing..

Let's face it: most internet sites are gonna tell you how to hook -up a guitar based on the AXE, then proceed to show some 3 way, 5 way switcheroo's to hook up to.

All well and good, but SHOW ME the input and output of the freakin' switch, and the pickup.

I do not need to know what Gibson does, Fender does, Or whoever...

What I DO NEED TO KNOW, is how things work.

Save your 'guitar wiring diagrams' with the decoder switching for the replacers... sheesh, if you ever looked for a '2 tone 1 volume 3 pickup' scenerio on the web, you know where I am at.

AND TO BOOT, the info is vague, and kiddy switch friendly.

SO, if i have a switch, I would like to know how it works.
OR, a rotary switch: I paid for it, you can't throw a quick schematic, and save me some time to chase circuits ?

I have worked on this scenerio for about 9 hours, ( 3 hrs/ Day), and walked away in frustratrion.

Only because, I do not do fancy wiring, nor have I found anyone on the net that really knows what they are talking about, AND, I suspect, that the folks that DO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT, ain't gonna share their precious 'SECRETS' with you.

Well, well well,
Bops is doin well on this lil' project, and I share with you the "Beta" wiring, if you will' in pictures.

I will finalize a schematic, once proven.

The idea is: through main switch:
Neck/Bridge
Neck/Middle(humbucker with Single coil/slug coil switch)
Middle
Middle/Bridge
Bridge

Here are some photos; as I am not the elecrical engineer,
I am just that guy that makes sure it all works, and so far this is working.

Any ideas, wiring ideas or whatever, please email me,
Honest, I am not the dick they say I am.

Pretty Much done

Outside of setting the bridge up, we are DONE with this one.....

Lessons learned: use a quality sealer prior to paint.
AVOID spray can laquers, use enamels.
DISREGARDE all non-vevdor guitar wiring sites.

Here be the baby, I loved building this one, as it is also for someone I love.

I had to chop a Bigsby spring to make it work, also added a pix of shielding, i may over kil on it, but it does work...all in all:
This puppy reeks BLINGl

oh yea the BEFORE PIX added as well

I will post schematics as a finale, and again, thanks for playin. Kiss Kiss.

As Promised..

Here is the schematics. as well as how i set-up intonation
for initial 'break-in.

The neck was tweeked about 2 1/4 turns positive so far.

Looks like I may need to file frets 22, 23, and 24.

Strings are Blue Steele 0.09'-.36.

Note, if you set up guitars, make sure you add at least 2 sets of strings to the cost.

I also took a pix of how I string Bigsby's..

Done with this, ........outside of logo's.

Attached is pix of setup, and my best attempt at Schematic.

Position 3 at switch, is at best, a work in progress....

Be good, and start messin with the instruments.
