For a long time (a year) i have not been able to use direct x plugs with cooledit because the p[rogram hangs when i try to refresh the direct x list. i have not been able to solve this problem, even tried reinstalling cooledit. no go. any ideas?
the only thing i can think of id that i once deleted a direct x plug in whose trial time had expired. i forgot which one it was, but it would show up in the list and, because it had expired, it was of no use- so in uncharacteristic tiediness, i thought i'd delete it. The problem started around this time. maybe coincidence?
i am running windows 98SE.

It is quite possible that could be the problem. A damaged or corrupted file has caused it for me as well.
I thought I remembered a thread about cleaning out deleted plugins from the list for another ap a number of months ago. That thread my give you some ideas.

I think there is a Direct X manager plug in free at this site.
http://thedirectxfiles.com/
I remember installing it, maybe that will find it for you to remove it.
I think it's called DXman and it's free.
Hope this helps

DXman lists only autotune and my waves bundle. These are the only plugsin I should have, so that doesn't seem to be it. it has been suggested that i delete all my plugs and then reinstall first cooledit and then the plugs. But i hate to touch the waves bundle. i lose my presets (I think) and i have to deal with the waves reauthorization mess. maybe that is the only way?

Have you tried downloading an update for direct x?

There is a registry tweak that you can perform to remove the plug in listing, this only removes the plug in name and not the plug in programme. Virtually all direct x plug ins are held in the registry value HKEY-CLASSES-ROOT\Filter
Just go through all the values until you reach the plug in name you want to remove and that's it. Remember to always backup before you carry out this tweak.
