I'm just wondering if this is possible. I'm obviously a newb when it comes to recording.

I'm planning on getting a shure SM57 but I'm not sure if I'll need an audio interface with it or if I can use it with my audiophile 2496.

If it's possible, can someone tell me what other equipments I'll need? Will I need Cables (types)? Preamps?

The Shure SM 57 mic is a low impedence microphone. Your audio card has line level RCA inputs. You need a microphone preamp to drive the signal into your soundcard.

You cannot simply plug your mic into your sound card.

I suggest you purchase an inexpensive mixer like a Behringer UB502 which is $40, has low and high impedence mic preamps, tone control and instrument inputs.

You plug the mixer output into the soundcard input.

yep man, you can use any preamp with XLR inputs for that microphone. I use the "cheap-bomb-proof" audiobuddy with very good results. In that preamp you have 2 separate inputs and only gain control for each channel. You can use too a condenser mic because it has phantom power for both channels. Its not really a good, good preamp, but can make the task for a home studio.

the other thing you can do is buy a mixer, but dont expect good quality from a behringer preamp.

Actually, for the $40 the Behringer mixer costs..the preamp is more than adequate.

I have hundreds of hours of live multitrack recording using one of my four Behringer boards. They are great value for the money.

And we should all thank Behringer for driving down the prices of Mackie, Yamaha, Peavey and Soundcraft boards.

My new Soundcraft is an amazing good deal...

yeah man... that is true... we have to thanks Behringer for that, but the worst preamp I ever tested are those of my 16 channels behringer mixer (I dont remember the model... that one with effect processor). I dont have complaints to use it on live concerts, but having any other preamp near my hand, I leave the behringer mixer on it box. Is true that Behringer is the "more things for the $" but not the "more quality for the $". Is true that the things are very very good built (solid as a rock), but calling for example "invisible preamps" at those preamps is nearly "lie". Like with the faders... for hell on earth... anyone that has used good faders, take the faders on my behringer mixer and laugh (and ok, dont fail, blablabla.... but its not even the "touch" of "pro" faders).

Thanks for the help, guys! I appreciate it. I'll see if I can get these things together.
