I'm a jazz player and want to carry around the real books on CD and call them up when needed (at a gig) with a handheld device. I know there are PDA's, which are too small, and tablet PC's, which are too expensive (and more powerful than necessary). Is there any sort of simple device that can read .pdf files, with a screen about the size of regular paper (or maybe even half)?

I can't answer that question, I have seen some 900 dollar 'pdf music stands' out there.
If I may ask, being a jazz musician, why would you need such a thing?, perhaps i am old hat, if ya got the change-ups, "meet you in g-thang"- no need for the notes on paper, then again I can sorta understand the serious stuff, like chick corea and such, again just curious why so heavy on charts
