View Full Version : how serious is latency for overdubbing?

Hi. I am thinking seriously of getting an M Audio Firewire 410 for my Dell Latitude D600 laptop (1.4 ghz, 256 mb, 70 gig hd) running Logic Audio Platinum 4.8).

I am concerned that latency would render overdubbing useless, and I really need to overdub.

Is this a serious concern?

Is there a better approach than the one I'm about to take (keeping the money about the same)?

Would a good usb unit like the mackie Spike, or the lexicon Omega be just as good?

My main question is about latency. It seems to me that if there is noticable latency, then it would be nearly impossible to work. Am I over-reacting?

Thanks.

Am I over-reacting
Well yes actually :D

You can compensate for dubbing latencey to sample accuracy in almost any recording software - heres an example from Samplitude :

There are some Samplitude connected instructions in there but its basically the same procedure.
As to your choice of cards - don't know any of thoses - sorry.
