hi guys,
i bought this software called cara. i ran a room optimization pattern on it. it's cool, it shows you where to best place your speakers to minimize garbage sound.
it also tells you the frequency response and reverb characteristics of your room. i'd rate my room at "needs a lot of work". but i haven't done any treatment yet to the room.
anyway, the computer generated a speaker/listener placement scheme that i wouldn't have thought of...pretty radical layout actually. i'll try moving my stuff around over the next couple of days and let you know if i can hear an audible improvement.
some people say "you can't use a computer to help design your room". my instinct is that these people are wrong. it's kind of like the big-blue ibm computer beating the russian chess champion. since i can't hire kasparov, i'll just let my computer take a stab at some of this.
i think a mixture of computer sims, spl analysis, listening, theory, knowledge of real world successful configs, and experimentation will breed the best results.
anyway, i'm glad i got the program, and will probably buy more like this over time. it's facscinating in a dr. spock kind of way.
