I'm running a p4 1.7 ghz 512 meg system with delta 1010 rack. s0nar v 2.2 and Win XP installed as a "Standard PC" option and two midiman 2x2's ..

- using certain NI pluggins and a few wave pluggins will cause Sonar to crash usually a hard crash.. the problem is it will not shut the process down completely - I will see the little midi indicator in my system tray - if I try to manually go in ctrl-alt-delete and end the process - nothing happens.. about 5 minutes 10 minutes later, I will get a Kernel error BSD and have to turn my computer off via the power switch.. Is this a Normal hazard with working in sonar? should I not have installed windows XP as Standard PC? - I have gone through all the trouble shooting steps at cakewalks site including all the steps for Kernel errors to no avail.. This same problem occured on a friend of mines system as well.. Anyone else dealing with this? thoughts, ideas.. (I'm using all current drivers for all hardware in my system.)

Maybe you should increase the buffers(latency slider in sonar)a little. When a crash occurs try to end the process and after a moment restart Sonar, wait for about 30 seconds and quit it again. That way you might be able to shut down the process completely and the midi indicator should also disappear.

I've got the latency I think in a reasonable zone, I am working at 24/96 most of the time - buffers are set to 512 k in the delta control panel. effective latency is around 4ms. your idea works, except, sonar wont allow me to use my sound card because it's in use by the remaining ghost process of sonar.. so the midi icon is gone, but I can't re-open sonar properly.

When I go to restart my computer a blue screen of death appears with my sound cards driver being shown as the culprit. ironically, and oddly the Blue screen doesn't kill my computer, as I only see it when I hit restart or shutdown.

My main question is this - Is this a normal hazard in working with sonar and using third party plugins?? - I mean, my latency slider should have no bearing on a BSOD.
does any one else have this problem?

No, it's not normal. Blue screens are usually caused by SERIOUS software problems or minor to major hardware problems. It's probably the way your sound card is configured, not your plug-ins and your latency slider. Try the newest drivers. Even if you already have, try uninstalling them with the Delta uninstaller included in the package and reinstall them after a reboot. If they don't work, try OLDER drivers. It's probably IRQ related. If you do have an IRQ conflict you may want to try reconfiguring them. You should be able to do it under Standard PC mode. I recommend changing it in the BIOS, if anywhere, but don't go screwing around in the BIOS if you don't know what you are doing.

There are occasional crashes in my Sonar as well. They are (thankfully) fairly rare. Like you, I get the midi icon in the taskbar. However, if I try to reopen Sonar, it will not open... (I have done control-alt-delete etc to see what is going on). At that point, the only fix I have found is to shut the machine off. On very rare occasions, it "hangs" at that point.... just kinda sits there (once I let it shut off for about 45 minutes... nothing). When it does that and I manually shut it off, I don't get the disk checking/bad shut down screen when I reboot. A fix would be wonderful.
