View Full Version : Radio Production question
I'm going to throw this one into the wind on the Audio Forum :
...suggestions on what type of mixer/console you'd install in a mid grade radio production studio. We're not recording bands here, just voices, but sometimes lots of them. With so many new choices, what would you suggest for good BASIC board ?
The industry sales guys have a ton of suggestions, I just thought for a change I'd see what this site says.

How does your station work? Do you need to be able to access other stuff from secondary rooms in your facility? Or is this just a single room board? Do you need to record multitrack or do you just need to bring up all of your speaking voices in a 2-track mix?
Makes a big difference... http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif

Thanks Ben...you're right.... essentially yes the board will have access top other studios through a patch rack channel. As for multi-tracks most of our productions involve just recording the voices first and we then edit everything on Cool-Edit.

I would get a used yamaha 02r if you are doing voice over work for commercial/ads. They are only like 2500 and are sort of a defacto standard in the mid-ranged commercial studios.

There are some great digital solutions out there... Unfortunately, names are escaping me right now (I haven't finished my morning coffee yet http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif ). They are great because the entire station becomes a great big computer in which anything can come up anywhere digitally.
One of the systems (not really a board) is the D.A.V.I.D. system which is going to be integrated with Sequoia software *very* soon. That and a couple Mackie's would get you what you need.
Then there are the traditional boards like Harrisons and you could use an Analog patch pannel. Some of the older Harrisons had issues with the faders going bad, though...
Let me think about names and I'll write more later...

the aforementioned Yamaha would be a good choice. The Panasonic DA7 is also a strong board if you can find one. Panasonic stopped marketing it to the US last year.
