Hey fellas...
I've got 3 PCs connected to a router so they can all share the same broadband cable internet connection. Is there any way to send files from one computer to another via the router?? Like a LAN?

I don't think so, i have just got a router yesterday in fact.

You will need an additional network card per machine with a cat5 crossover cable.

You sure can!!!

Win 2000 / XP

Under system properties in the control panel:

->Network identification Tab
->Click properties button
->Give your computer a name
->Make it a member of a workgroup, the name is arbitrary
->re-boot

Do the same to the other PC (different pc name, SAME workgroup name)

Note: process written while staring at a 2000 machine, may change slightly on XP

Another note: Disable software firewalls, that will case the PC to ignore all others on the network.

The computers will now see each other under My Network Places. You will need to setup sharing on any drives / folders you want to see on the other computer.

onboard ethernet on your mobos should get you going in the right direction. not sure if you need a nic. but it's definitely doable. in fact, that is one of the main functions of a lan. believe it or not, you will have a lan...just smaller than a big-boy company, but same idea.

i know win2k has this super easy thing if you are only sending files between two computers. it's called something like "my cheezy little lan".

you don't even need a router for that one. just cat5-cat5 cable and designate one computer as the master. it's in the help files somewhere.

but don't quote me on this!

yea if ya wanna get heavy ya can assign ip's to printers, etc - yuk too much like work.
I basicaly run 4 puters for family (ran 'drops' through the walls) peer to peer in win 2000, easy lan with a broadband router which is pretty much a NAD router with a dynamic isp, so lost you will be ok as far as the firewall stuff as ip is always moving in the Nad. If you wanna get froggy you can reconfigure the nad settings but ya gotta be sharp as when the broadband goes wacky, and mac address changes, you are up **** creek without an intellegent support team - hence peer to peer.
of course I am almost always never correct and welcome other suggestions.
Ps good to see you all again, been really busy with 'stuff', j - I am gonna send you some stuff for thoughts, and this weekend the "freakin Bass transducer files" lol finally got the neck tweaked - what a bitch using those ultra lights -crap never again !
be good

Well... maybe the whole router/LAN thing won't be happenin for me. All three of the PC's are running Win98SE as they're older rigs.... a 600mhz Athon, a 500mhz pentium, and a 333mhz Athlon. My fourth computer, which is a dedicated Nforce2/2500+Barton recording rig is running by it's lonesome on Win XP... and I'd like to keep it that way... http://www.audioforums.com/forums/biggrin.gif

So is their any way to make this happen with the 3 Win98se systems?

thanks for the replies fellas

The workgroup setting still applies, you just have to get to it a different way. I believe it's buried in the netwok control panel on a tab called "Identification". Shortcut - Right click on "Network Neighborhood" and hit "Properties".

The process is similar though, give them a unique name and the same workgroup name, re-boot, and voila!

Hi
I have a similar problem.

I have a "D-Link's" router (DI-704P), that I just purchased. I am trying to share the files between 2 computers. I know that the computers see each other (I can ping the XP machine and get a response, same the win 98 machine, and I am able to connect the net and print from both computers.

The folders/drivers were set for full access. though win98 machine gives me problems. I was originally able to set for write &read, but now (after playing around), it is disconnected. When I go to sharing it gives me error: "Error occured while trying to set access control list..."

I had this msg before, somehow I was able to set it for sharing (hand under the letter), now I can't.

Any idea why is it doing it?
Also, where do I go to access the 2nd computer folders in Win98 machine. I can't find my network neighbourhood or such..

Any help would be appreciated.
thanx

See my post under "Win 98 Connection to Network" - should help. Win XP defaults to bridging things it shouldn't - keeps it from seeing other machines. There's a link to MicroSlop's workaround... Steve
