Hey. My current Audio Recording setup is based around 2 DA-88s that I record to, then dump into a computer for mixing/editing. I am using a G4 500 512mb with a MOTU 2408 and the included AudioDesk software. I want to bypass the whole DA-88 rig and multi-track record directly into Digital Performer 3. Probably with a MOTU I/O expansion. Is this a good idea? How would I do this in the most effecient way.

Also, a lot of people write in that they are getting a certain large number of "live" tracks on their systems, how are they doing this? I mean, the mics/instruments are plugged directly from a preamp to the I/O interface in the computer? I'd like to know the right way to do this.

Any info or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I use the Mackie d8b and have 24 tracks of light pipe i/o to the 2408 going into DP3. Works great. You could get a less expensive board like a Spirit, or Panasonic and do a similar setup. I can record 24 live tracks at once if I want. Check out my web site for details.

What you have to have is a mixer with multiple outputs (ideally 8) that you can wire to your interface (2408) inputs. Route the input channels on your mixer to the different outputs according to how you want to group things just like you would to a DA88. Then create 8 tracks in DP with each of their inputs set to a different channel just as if each track was a tape track. Make sure 'MultiRecord' is ticked (it's in the Mini Menu of the Tracks window - stupid place for it, but there you go...). If you only need to record 8 tracks at a time, then the 2408 will do you - if you want more, you'll have to add another interface and have more outputs from your mixer. I use the 24i so I can record all my keyboards and FX at one pass.
