This is probably a stupid question but how do you assign the meteronome sound to an external midi device? To this point I have been unable to get it to make any sound at all.

Should be pretty easy - double click the metronome icon and the settings dialogue will appear. On the left are various options for how the click behaves, make sure MIDI click is selected (checked).

On the right it says 'Data for Midi click...' There's two pop up menus - one next to 'Accented:' and one next to 'Normal:' . Click on them and a list of your midi instruments should appear. From this list you have to select which instrument and which channel you want the click to play on. Why they bother making you do it twice I have no idea, but there you go. Anyway, the usual thing is to put a drum patch on midi channel 10 of a multitimbral module (make sure it's in multi mode).Select this instrument and channel in the pop ups.

Then, underneath the pop ups are note, velocity and gate settings. As long as you've set the instrument and channel correctly (and you can hear the module's output as normal), you should be able to fiddle with the note and hear what the result is, so you can set what sound you want your click to play (you have to make sure 'Audition click' is checked at the bottom left). I use a hi hat, others use rimshots or cowbells. The gate setting is pretty meaningless.

That should do it.

Good luck

PS. if you can't find the metronome icon choose 'Click and Countoff Options...' from the Basics menu
