How do I get any sound going here?

First off I installed Digital Performer 2.7 onto my system.

I then installed the audio card and software for the MOTU 2408 into my Mac Power G4. I then attached the audio wire from the slot on the card to the back of the motu into the required slot which says "audio wire".

I then attached a mic cable into a shureSM57 mic and attached the other end into "mic slot #8" on the back of mackie1608. I then took an audio cable and put one end into the "line" slot above the "mic #8 slot". Then I proceeded to plug the other end into the MOTU's channel 8 "line in" slot.

I started Digital Performer and recieved the error "must install FREEmidi apllication".

I opened up the installation file but then I hit a brick wall and got confused so here I am.

I basically installed the software on my G4 not knowing what the hell I should be choosing in the first place and basically clicked OK. I am brand new at this recording stuff .....if you hadn't figured out already http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif

I know I must somehow get past this FreeMidi obstacle and Im sure I will be back here lots more......unless you can somehow warn me about obstacles that will soon come after http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif

So any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!!!!!

If you are only using the system to do audio then the freemidi setup is not improtant. Run the fremidid set up and choose new from the file menu and them just choose save as freeemidi set up after that and you should be in business. Open up DP while freemidi setup is still open. If you are running midi then it is a little more complicated but still pretty easy.
Within DP you will need to configure to your specific audio interface. If it is a MOTU interface it will be easy. I use an 828 with a dual G4 800 and an extensive midi setup and have good luck.

Your main mistake was the audio cable from the line jack on #8 of the Mackie. This is a line INPUT to the channel NOT an output. You need to take an OUTPUT from the mixer to the INPUT on the 2408. Use either a main output or the direct channel out.

As for DP or Audiodesk, as the man says, you need to set that up right too. It's pretty easy. Go to Basics>Configure Hardware Driver.... and make sure the MOTU PCI-324 is selected. Hit OK when it is. Then go to your tracks overview window and decide which track to record on. Under the INPUT column, make sure the input on the 2408 that has the wire from your Mackie is selected (e.g. Analog 1). Under the OUTPUT column, make sure the track is set to Analog 1-2. (You should wire the outputs 1 & 2 of the 2408 to two LINE inputs on your Mackie).

Got it so far? OK but BE CAREFUL! Before you put the track into record, go to Basics again and make sure 'Audio Patch Thru' is NOT ticked. This way, you'll be able to listen to what you've already recorded and record new stuff along with it.

Shall I summarise? ok. Mic to mic input on Mackie. Output of Mackie to input on 2408. Track input on DP/Audiodesk set to same as mackie input on 2408. Output of track set to Analog 1-2. Analog outputs 1&2 on 2408 wired to line inputs on Mackie. 'Audio Patch Thru' in 'Basics' menu of DP/Audiodesk switched OFF. Away you go. Just make sure you switch the record button on the track off when you've finished recording and want to play it back.

best of luck
