ok, i recently purchased a midi express xt serial interface off of ebay for use as an interface to my pc, where i will do my sequencing in logic plat, in order to monitor/manipulate audio in pro tools on my g4 simultaneously. the problem is that the computer can't find the interface, i'll list all the suspect factors (yes the unit is on, and set to pc mode):
1. the seller on ebay didn't include the motu parallel cable, so i purchased a belkin pro series db25 parallel cable and gender changer, as the original cable was male/male, and i needed male/female. both are wired straight-through.
2. i formatted to start clean with the interface, and installed win98. after fully completing setup, there is no printer port listed in my device manager. since i've never paid much attention to this before, i don't know if it should be there automatically or not. i'm guessing it should. if i try to install one using add new hardware, it successfully installs the printer port driver, only to tell me that the device isn't present or functioning correctly after a reboot. i think my parallel port (the computer's a gateway 333c, over three years old) could be broken.
3. the xt console software tells me that it can't find the interface and to check the driver in the control panel. when i go to sound, game, and joypad controllers (<- i don't think that's what it's called, but you know what i mean, where the driver should show up), there's no listing for the motu. but, when i got to my multimedia tab in the control panel, i can select the motu interface (in totality or each channel seperately) as an output. so, although it doesn't show up in the device manager, the computer seems to know it should be there.
4. at startup, the motu software tells me that the parallel port doesn't exist or has a problem.
ok, so i think that my parallel port is dead, which is ok, i have no problem with buying a new mb (i've been wanting one anyway), i just need confirmation before i do it. so, does anyone have any input? any help will be sincerely appreciated, thanks for your time.
