VST plugin or stand alone instrument software?

i know that you can buy software syths which are either VST plugin for Cubase for example, or stand alone software. which is better and whats the difference?

Some can be run both ways, like most (if not all) of the VST instruments from Native Instruments.

Depends on what you need, I guess!
