Hello just wanted to let everyone know my beloved Asus A7N8X has gone into a state of "no post black screen death". It's looking bad it started out as a video issue Friday morning...then suddenly Sunday it progressed to where we are now...we're doing all we can to keep her with us, but it's looking bleak.

If anyone knows a solution to save her entirely it would be great. We here are hoping for the best if not we only pray we can save the hard drive and all audio information intact and regretfully send A7N8X back to her maker.

Keep us in your thoughts

Please comment below if you have any suggestions to revive her so we can post and go into the OS.

Your data is most likely ok. Unplug and reseat all PCI/AGP cards, CPU and memory. Have you tried resetting the CMOS? What kind of power supply are you using? (brand, output, model)

better yet... unplug all the PCI/AGP cards and don't reseat them at all... leave them out for now. Reseat the CPU and just one DIMM of memory. Definately reset the CMOS. Maybe you could put a voltmeter to the PS and make sure you have proper voltage on your +3.3v, 7v, and 12v rails... especially that +3.3v rail...

hope all goes well.

Are you getting the regular one beep post noise?

Or is it just dead and black screen?

Have you looked to see if when you power it up the cpu fan and the fan from the psu are spinning and not blocked by cables?

Pull all the PCI cards and leave one stick of ram. Also take off the heatsink and fan form the cpu very very carefully with the right flat head screw driver and take out the chip. Then put it back in and re-install the CPU heatsink and Fan.

Try pushing down hard on the stick of ram to be sure it is in all the way.

Check all connections form cables and be sure they are all in all the way and nice and tight.

Power supply main cable in all the way?

ATA Cables in all the way?

Monitor/VGA cable in all the way?

When you put in the motherboard, did you make sure that all the stand offs where in and tight as well as in the right place?

One more than is needed sitting under that board could be bridging a circut and causing a problem.

Thank you maggotcontrol,the_lost, and dawboxpro for your responses to such a tragic situation.

She is showing signs of vitality but we are far from where we need to be.

I am responding in a somewhat reverse order to your posts bear with me.

Black screen of death is nothing no POST so definitely no post beeps just the quasi black screen illuminated by the electric current flowing to the monitor giving that "oh she's in standby mode" or "I left the monitor on" only to realize you hear your PS and CPU fans whirring in the distance
and she's not moving when you swing the mouse.

Cables and blockage are of no concern for her, she sits in a tower so huge another board could be placed inside.

TO give you more insight to our technique and to my dear A7N8X. We only remove the CPU to upgrade the CPU. She has no PCI cards installed merely a video card so we can see whats going on onscreen.

She also has an AMD approved PS unit though I can think which one at the moment but it's more than enough power to keep her juices flowing.

We removed her video card then placed a pci card to see if it was a video issue but that was not the case.

Doing all that can be done without moving any jumpers batteries or anything of the sort.

However since the original post the bios was reset through the keyboard method. She is now awake the first major obstacle is cleared

Now though booting she still won't open the OS. The system file is damaged and it can't be retrieved or repaired via MS ERC by any means I am aware of.

Question:
If a new OS is installed over the existing will that mean I have to reinstall everything else ? Or is a soft install possible (think of it as a Windows upgrade just with the same OS)

What has been done so far is on another hard drive the same OS and basic drivers have been installed.

Question:
How can the other system file be repaired so she can go back to her normal state?

or

Question
How can the programs from the other hard drive be moved without losing data and presets?

Thank you for reading and taking time out from your schedules, mixes and meltdowns to address our issue.

Happy day she is alive and well

making ERD's today ASAP

with parallel install simply renamed old system file (used this method with MS ERC but it did not work for some odd reason)

Thank you all so much for your replies.
I do still have those questions I asked in my previos post just for know how....

now to go fry my eyesockets for a few hours by glaring into the console during a mix
