Can someone recommend a good notation-based midi sequencer for me? I'm using Windows XP and I'd like to be able to step-input notes onto a staff rather than the piano-roll style of most sequencers. I know there are some programs like Finale and Sibelius that are clearly notation-based, but from what I hear they're also very limited in what they can do with midi sequencing (panning, volumes envelopes, etc.) I used to use an old program called Encore which was very much like what I'm looking for, but that's not compatible with Windows XP.

You should try Melody Assitant. It is downloadable from http://www.myriad-online.com.
