Can anyone link me to a chart or article that gives a good breakdown list of comparative specs between the different incarnations of the Athlon CPU from at least the 1st Thoroughbreds up to now, with specific model numbers listed. I'm looking for spec nfo such as - Actual CPU clock speed, FSB, Cache size, Power dissipation, instruction set implementations (such as SSEE), die processing technology (such as .13 micron) & any other significant feature differences that have evolved.

It's a bit confusing shopping for an Athlon CPU when I know there can be some differences that their generic naming speed designation gives me no indication of. With different incarnations of Thoroughbreds & Barton's & speed naming overlap points & AMD's clouding the picture more with their ridicules speed naming scheme in which they arbitrarily give a higher speed rating to a lower clock speed chip just because they increased the cache size or added an instruction. Uhhh... guess what, that chips performance isn't increased across the board, but only in applications that make heavy use of that specific enhancement & it's performance will actually suffer relative to the lower speed rated (but higher actual clock speed) older chip in other Apps. What a fiasco their speed naming scheme is. Clock speed is the only spec that effects performance across the board & the actual speed should be used as an indicative naming designation with any other enhancements tagged to the name via an additional lettering/numbering suffix. I know their rationalization of the whole Intel vs. AMD clock speed
isn't everything & that's true, but still, it's the best across the board performance indicative variable within a given processor architecture.

Anyway... I digress... to my original query...anyone?

Man I am just as confused as you are? I really do wish I could help, but the reality is exactly what you have stated and even worse is the fact that they will say that it is entirely beneficial for a specific application but in other areas you can visibly see where the performance suffers.

the amd website has tons of charts, including what's coming up over the next two years.

AnandTech article with a quick process size / power dissipation history up to XP2800+ Thoroughbred-B: http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1718&p=3

The best source is really the AMD website though.

Tom's hardware website had an article with the evolution of the athlon processor.
Here's a handy table from their site: http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030623/images/cpu_history_big.gif

hope this helps clear things a bit http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif

Thanks guys, I think I've got it pretty well sorted out now. Those Anandtech & TomsHardware charts & articles were some I was looking for that I had remembered seeing before but couldn't remember where I'd seen them. I found a few more charts & some needed nfo searching through the Anandtech archives + a link from an Anandtech article to the PDF Athlon specification sheets that I was unable to find by searching AMD's site myself.

RV, for some reason that chart you linked to isn't coming up for me. I found the page it's from & tried clicking the chart (to enlarge) directly from their but I guess it's a temporary problem on their server. Anyway I'm fine with what nfo I have now.

Thanks all.
