I was wondering if any of you think that all of these consumer-driven updates and additions to software(i.e. OS) can cause many or most of the problems that people seem to experience. I'm no computer scientist, and I'm sure there can be other things going on. But if an OS adds "150 new features" blah, would you say this is just asking for some bugs? I am on Win95 with a 100MHz processor, it almost never crashes. It only seems to crash when I have tons of stuff running simultaneously, a problem that might be ameliorated with a RAM upgrade. My computer was previously owned twice before I got it, and it has had so much junk installed and taken off ..... all these software companies and MS are leaving 95 in the dust, and yet I have a system that is stable 99% of the time, and aside from intensive multi-media apps or whatever, I can do everything I need(and why does the average home user need too much more? I can run Winamp just fine).

How is progress measured?

Winamp is hardly the sophisticated sort of software a lot of us in this forum use. Do you have a DAW? If so, what are you using for software and sound card? You might be surprised if your needs were greater.

I posted this in the Backstage lounge intentionally. I keep reading all these horror stories(audio or no), people suffering with OSes, I don't really have any problems at all for home use, with 95. So I'm wondering if some good things are lost as companies must continually put out a better product.

I use a synth/keyboard with basic sequencing, DSP and mixing.

Enlightend, interesting.

I have 2 computers in my home setup, the most stable is the one I use for MIDI sequencing. It's a 1st generation Pentium, 300mHz running Windows 95 and Cakewalk Pro 9.0

It never crashes. It still performs the functions I ask it to do efficiantly and fast.. of course there are tasks it cannot perform.. but i don't even try.

Progress is measured when there are applications that you can no longer run at an optimal level on your PC and you have to get a new one.

If everything that you NEED to run your PC is working right now, I wouldn't change just to change. Why??? Everything is WORKING!

For me, I have an 800 Mhz Athlon and I just found out that the MBox (which is perfect for what I want to do...2 ins, 2 outs w/Focusrite Pre-amps) is now available for Win XP. I want to run it, but I need to get a faster PC to keep up. They recommend at least a 1 Ghz machine. Is it possible that it could run on my PC? It's possible, but will it be as good as it can be? Maybe, maybe not.

It's what works for YOU, not necessarily what is the biggest, baddest or fastest PC out there.
