I'm close to finsishing my 13 song cd and want to design my own inserts. Id like it to be a six to 8 page insert in order to include lyrics.
I confident about designing but what is the best thing to use - can anyone recommend good software specific to creating inserts. How about printing - is it best (cheaper) to print yourself or to take final design to a printer? Are any of you using pre-fab insert sheets? I only want to initially produce about 100. Thanks

Any 'DTP' sotware can be used. I have CD insert templates for most of the 'DTP' packages.
If you are only producing a run of 100, it may be cheaper to print your own. But a printer will give you better quality. Find out what software is compatable with your print shop and use the same as he is, if possible. (Most printers use Macs).
The more colours you use, the more expensive the print run.

i have designed several cd layouts for locl bands. Once you find a pressing plant that u wamt to get your discs made at, ask them for their templates. Almost all professional print shops use photo shop. They usually have a web site you can download templates from. Hope that helps. check out www.tapecomplex.com (http://www.tapecomplex.com) in boston. I use them frequently, and have had great results.
