Over the past couple of years heavy music (particularly nu-metal) has become really popular... do you think heavy music will continue to be popular and not just be a passing fasion?

I think it will continue in popularity. Of course the first "nu-metal" band I was into was Kiss back when I was in 7th grade when they released hotter than hell in the early 70's http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif I see nothing new with this style except maybe a DJ thrown on stage for good measure. This music has been around for about 30 years IMO.

Big difference between Nu-Metal and Kiss. Kiss sang about partying, and about women. They also considered themselves to be performers(like the haribands of the '80s also thought). Now adays with Nu-Metal, they will sing about their abusive Parents and stuff. And they have no respect for showmanship. It's all about the song.

Heavy never went away, you were just looking in the wrong places. The 90s had tons of great heavy bands w/o DJs I might add...

Kyuss
Ministry
Janes Addiction
Soundgarden
Jesus Lizard
Clutch
Helmet
Fu Manchu
Monster Magnet
Rollins Band
Melvins
Tool
Refused

most are still alive and kicking (a*s*s)...

Nu metal isnt really doing anything for the industry. As such ive got a feeling Hardcore is going to take some more prominence early in our new century. Im not the hugest fan of either, but each to their own. Just basing my estimate on the local live scenes. Every new band seems to be a hardcore act of some sort. I havent heard a new thrash band for ages. Which is a shame. Cos metal to me will always mean Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and so forth.

No one has mentioned Pantera, I am disappointed.

There was this one band I was exposed to years back, I think they were called "Napalm Death", some good sounds, I think they only made one album, with the reason put forth: "Why mess with perfection". I can't remember if that was their name or not.

Also there is Testament, though IMO I think their vocals sometimes ruin what was otherwise excellent.

Maybe I'm getting off topic here, just wanted to add to the discussion...

Napalm Death- that's grindcore, man! F-ing brutal. They're still going and have made quite a few albums, look on amazon.com for a list.
If you like Napalm Death, you may also be interested in bands like:
Carcass (early stuff grincore, later more melodic Death Metal)
Strapping Young Lad (kind of industrial grindcore, but tuneful...)
Onedice (fairly new British grindcore act)
Messhuggah (or however u spell it - death metal with f-ing complicated beats, very groovy apparently).

Best band i've ever heard though is Opeth - combining death/black metal with progressive rock, goth, acoustic passages... awesome. Sometimes their earlier stuff seems a bit disjointed but it's all v v v good music.

I have been a metal fan since i was a kid and i don't think there has been a real good metal band in years. I listen to stuff like Nile, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Suffocation, Dissection, etc and all these bands have taken metal to new extremes. Most people would think the bands listen in this thread (especially ursus')are considered heavy but i think they are quite mellow and uncreative compared to the ones i have listed. Its a shame that these extreme bands don't get the exposure they deserve. I think bands like metallica paved the way for a whole new world of commerciallly friendly "metal" that has sucked the life from everything metal stands for. Speed, brutallity, intricacy, inensity, creativity, and the pure anger of it has all been washed away in an attempt to appeal to the average joe, who could never truly appreciate it anyway. Maybe hard core music has been on the rise but its a long way from being metal. Metal only lives for those that know where to find it. And its not on the radio or in the mainstream charts. You have to dig deeper than that thesedays. http://committed.to/chaos

I appreciate you guys listing some of these bands, and I agree that you have to often look. That's why I always loved college radio, most of the time they would play some truly remarkable music that you will probably never hear anywhere else. I think there are probably quite a few great bands and good music that almost no one knows about, probably this has happened for many years........like with Classical, there are some really excellent composers, with truly unique styles that contributed to music development but few people even know they existed. When I took (Western)music history(which enriched my life in ways I cannot describe) we learned about some of them, like during the Romantic period - many people nowadays know about Chopin, but almost no one knows that he got his style from John Field, and English composer. And what's more, there were several other composers during that time, making some really unique and cool music, like Pinto and several others whose names I've forgotten, and few people know of or seem to care about them. And how many people just never actualized their musical aptitude, or couldn't record it, or lie drunken in the gutter........I want to be exposed to great music.

I'm not as into metal at this time in my life, not like I was in adolescence http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif, but maybe I'll be able to check out some of these bands. I have made a note of many of the recommendations throughout this forum, I don't have much money but am always looking for good music, which as was accurately pointed out may often require moving away from the beaten path.

I also like some of Sepultura's stuff. Some of the best thrash I have ever heard was by Death Metal bands. Some really talented and skilled folk ....
