Hello,
I've been approached to do some custom music for a video production house. They make corporate videos. I was referred by the first person I supplied some music to for an instructional video. With him I basically haven't set a price because he's a half-arsed relative, but for these folks who approached me, I don't have a clue where to start on fixing prices. Where do I start looking for a reference point for this? I figure that most folks use buy-out music. But, these people actually want some original music. Also, what would be the best way to protect myself (other than copyright of course) but still get them some music to listen to ie.. demos etc. before they've actually paid me for making it? Should I be consulting an entertainment lawyer? Thanks.

Though I have been asked, I haven't started any Public services yet myself but my suggestion would be that you give a few specific examples here so that others can maybe give you an estimate on what to charge.

Also of course you would have to blance that price out by how proffessional you see yourself & your setup. I mean of course someone who has $30,000 in gear is going to charge alot more then someone with a $3,000 setup. And also experience comes into play. Someone who has an associates degree in Audi or Video Production & is still paying off there tuition is also going to charge a bit more but then make it up in the service. All these things can come into play.

I would also suggest that maybe you call some studios & you can pretend your wanting that service & get an estimate & adjust it to your needs. You might even just be able to call one of these places & just be up front & honest some people are really good about these things as once possibly in your situation aswell! Goodluck! http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif
