we are currently running windows 2000 sp3 on a p4 system with echo layla 20bit card 8ins/outs. We have no problem recording 8 tracks simultaneously. while looking around for another layla to hook up via word clock and get 16 ins/outs, we found a digidesign 882 I/O unit with TDM pci card.
in short, can this hardware be used in windows 2000? and with what driver (ASIO)?

can it also be hooked up to the layla for sync, and have all the extra inputs (8 more in/out) be accessible to an ASIO application like cubase sx? or does this digi hardware need to be used with protools? (i suspect as long as you have a legit driver you can mix and match cards and have more inputs...but never set this up before so better check)

part of the reason for this inquiry is that on the digidesign site they have an ASIO driver for windows XP, however they also say that one of the possible windows OSs for protools with the 882 unit is w2k.

is it possible to use the XP asio driver under w2k? or what is the correct driver?

currently we only have the ASIO driver for the layla, and whatever ASIO engine cubase installs to the system.

another way to say the point is this: is it easier to just use XP on this machine instead? or is there a way to get it running with what is already set up?

thanks in advance for your help...

Well that particular product is a bit older and part of the older TDM system that works with Win2K,however,Digi's Asio drivers will only work on Win XP on the PC side period, and midi is inactive with Digi's ASIO,so forget about midi sync.Besides,Digi's Asio is still fairly problematic with certain apps. You might try asking around over here http://duc.digidesign.com/
