Hi all,

When i listen to mp3s with winamp or media player the system occasionally stops and freezes in a second and then go back to normal...when it freezes it makes 'drilling sounds' as if it loops a bit of the music again and again in a second..its annoying when your really enjoying the music when it does that..

I just upgraded my pc with the following hardwares:

Asus p4b533-e motherboard (with onboard audio card)
Pentium 4 2,4 Ghz
512 Mb DDR SDRAM

I use my good old Soundblaster live! sound card with the newest Win XP drivers..and I have disabled the onboard audio card via BIOS..

I also installed Windows XP..

I don't think the problem lies in the soundcard because i have tried it with different soundcards with the newest drivers which didn't help...

I appreciate you read this..hope you can help me because i really don't know where the problem lies...

I have had nothing but problems with Winamp, and havent used it for about 3 years. Its always been horrible in my opinion. uninstall it and see what happens with media player. also look in to see if you have any irq conflicts with your Audio card. That could be your problem although xp is generally very good with Irq stuff (you know the 25 of them that xp says it has though it bundles them all together). I always set up my os as standard pc and not the default acpi.

There should be absolutely no reason to use standard PC mode on that motherboard and soundcard. In fact, I think you'll have more problems that way. Try using just the drivers that WinXP automatically installs during setup. Also try different PCI slots. Some slots may have shared IRQs with other devices.

a basic curse of upgrading to "pro" sound is that your cheezy stuff that comes with the computer can often start to cause conflicts.

one related basic idea is to turn off all computer sounds (except the bios bootup beep stuff). no stupid "chunnngg!" sound when you get an error message or whatever.

the reason for this is some of those lo-fi sounds are set to something completely cheezy like 22khz. it can accidentally cause your soundcard to reset its sample rate.

not sure what soundblaster is all about, but i know they seem to like 48khz for some god-unknown reason. so a "pro" 48khz soundblaster card could be getting freaked by your computer sounds.

not sure how that relates to winamp, but i figured i'd "chime in" on this one too.

i tried to uninstall winamp and played the mp3s with media player 9 but that didn't solve the problem...so winamp is no longer a suspect...

maggotcontrol i think your right..i'll try to disable the sounds that Windows XP makes all the time...but in the other hand I don't recall that had any reason to make sounds when these annoying 'stops' occured..but i'll give it a try..

Hi!
I have had a similar issue one year ago with a RME audiocard!
It was solved downgrading the motherboard BIOS!
Try to downgrade or upgrade the mobo BIOS!
Who knows!
Bye!

I am guessin here--could it be a 'buffer' setting in audio settings?
You know the allow the dma buffer size thang (yoshi?)

The key is keeping it simple. Troglo is right on on the bios idea. I had a Audiophile 24/96 card that was freaking in Acid 4.0 so I updated the driver from the midiman website and the problem was worse.

I dumped the new driver and installed the old version from last summer.

Problem solved..

The newest and latest is not allways the answer. If your setup works fine do not update anything.

Also having 3 or 4 different kinds of free MP3 players can mess things up as well. Find one you like and stick with it.
