CD media

Hi!
I just have one question.
Is it true that some media (cheap) last maybe for two years and some for long time??
So I tried in Nero Burning softw. function CD Speed/Disc info where I got two results.
Short Strategy (cheap CD's) and
Long Strategy.
Is that true??I never thought about that.
And what about DVD media?Is it same??

I'm kind of confused.Can someone explain me that??
