what is this and how do i get the driver, do i need hardware for it???

asio stands for "audio stream input output". it is steinberg's protocol, which allows substantially better performance than your standard windows drivers. since it is a "free" protocol, most developers have latched onto it and support this standard.

to use "asio" you need software that uses it (most "real" software does) and hardware that suports asio (again most "real" soundcards do).

the biggest advantage to asio is far lower latency compared to your standard windows stuff. this means your system is responsive instead of sluggish.
