Can anyone give me advice on acheiving a good heavy metal type sounding guitar. I have access to the following equipment.

1. BOSS 505 Guitar Effects Pedal
2. Amplitube Plugin
3. Steinbergs Overdrive Plugin
3. Antares Microphone Modeler Plugin
4. Most Waves plugins Plugin

I don't have any amps or real mics to record the sound with, so it's DI'd straight in from the Boss 505 to the sequencer. I've got something that's soudning ok with the Overdrive plugin using the Speaker Emulation to elimate the "fizzy" distorted sound that DIing causes. Any tips or advice would be great. If someone can recommend some standard mics used for creating a good metal sounding guitar i might be able to model it with the microphone modeler.

If the di sound you are getting isn't too bad then try using the mic modeler with the Shure sm57 preset. Bypass the source mic and turn up the tube saturation a bit. try copying the track and using maybe the Sinheiser MD421 preset or one of the royer ribbon mics. Layering your track a few times and eqing the bad **** out of them is the best way to go. I find the mic modeler to be quite nice for guitars. You could just go through all the presets untill you find what your lookin for. the 57 and the MD421 are pretty much the standard for recording metal guitars so that should be a good place to start.

i get great results using the Antares Mic Modeller and the Amplitube together. The Shure-57 is definatly the setting to try first. Forget about using the Boss pedal, just plug straight in and find a good sound on the Amplitube.

I used to be a real purist for the sound of a good Tube Amp, but i was amazed at the sounds you can get with these 2 plugins. It may not be the ultimate guitar tone, but unless you are recording to tape, in a great room, with a great mic, and at least 2-3 top quality tube amps, you probably wont get better results anyway.
