View Full Version : Gated drum verb in software?

What do you guys do for a good sounding gated drum verb (i.e. snare, toms) with software verbs? I have just recently switched over from a triple ADAT, external mixer and outboard effects based studio to working entirely within the PC. I have yet to find any gated verbs that sound even remotely as good as those in outboard units. Anybody know of any? Any ideas how to create my own?

Thanks

Tim

I'm in a similar phase - trying to work almost exclusively in software - but it's come to my attention that there are some effects that are GREAT in software and others that aren't. I think that reverb, for now anyway, is something best left to an external unit... the software verbs just don't seem to cut it.

However, if you DO want to use software for it, I hear fairly good things about the one that you can get with Soundforge - it has a name, but I can't remember it right now.

You're probably thinking of the Acoustic Mirror. But I wasn't enquiring about software verbs in general, but rather a more detailed question about "gated reverbs" for drums, particularly for snare and toms. While I agree that software verbs have a ways to go yet, I feel the halls, plates and rooms aren't too bad and can be usable, but the gated verbs seem to be non existent. So I was enquiring more about creating my own.

I hate to point out the obvious, but why not just use a reverb and a gate in series?

Absolutely.
A good reverb and a good gate will work much better than a gated preset. On TDM using the Lexiverb with Drawmer gates gives MUCH wider control of extending snare drums. The 'verb and gate on the UAD card sounds cool too (watch out collins...)

Okay, I had already tried a software gate and reverb, with little success getting anything like the gated verbs in my lexicon. I guess what I am asking then, is what gate and verb settings you're using for this sound. Narcoman, you use the Collins reference. What settings would you use to achieve that sound, and which plugs. I have the Waves Gold bundle, and I will probably be getting the UltraFunk plugs soon. Other than that, I guess I could just record a wet track from my Lexicion.

Cheers

Found One, and it ain't too bad. The new version of FreeverbToo has a built in gate. Works pretty darn good for gated drums. The reverb itself sounds pretty decent as well. Can't beat free http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif
