View Full Version : 2 questions concerning .wav files

Hi,
I got two questions, one concerns strange wav file behaviour, and the other is a simple level/volume/normalisation query.

Simple question first:

1. Are there some standard volume/normalisation settings I should use before converting a wav file to cda format for CD burning?

Ok, now the rambling question:

2. I'm having a strange problem I've never come across before:

I cannot get any response in Cubase from certain imported audio (wav) files. They will appear listed in the audio pool and on the designated audio track as a part but no sound output or meter level will occur.

I have tried creating a new project and importing, and also importing into an existing project (containing working audio) to see if the files work.

If I play back arrangements featuring previously imported audio files those files play back fine, but once I try to import a problem file, even previously working audio will give no sound/level.

In other words, it only seems to happen with a few new wavs I downloaded recently.
Other wav files work fine, unless I then import or audition in Cubase a problem file - then no wavs will play back at all(!) until I reboot Cubase.

These problem files work fine in Soundforge and Win Media Player!

The wav files that work ok are PCM 44,100 Hz, 16-bit, mono.

If I open the Save As dialogue in Soundforge on one of the problem files I see PCM 19,886 Hz, 8-bit, mono.

Now here's another strange thing about these files:

If I resample and save the file as 44,100 Hz, 16-bit, mono, then hit Save As again, it says 44,100 Hz, 16-bit, mono (of course!)
However, if I then close Soundforge off, reboot it and load up the file it will be Save As PCM 19,886 Hz, 8-bit, mono again.. wtf?
