Ok, I'm an extreme amateur at recording, I have basically no money right now but I just need to know how to get my sm57 to have enough volume to record at desirable levels into CoolEdit Pro. Right now I have the mic connected through a xlr low z to 1/4 hi z cable with a 1/4 to 1/8 adaptor on that into the audigy (i cant afford better right now). The microsoft +20db to mic is just not enough. With mic recording volume at full I get -30 through -15db levels at reasonable instrument volume. Is there a software program that can boost the mic even more? Or if there isn't, what external device should i look for (very cheap)?

Hi

Microphones need a preamplifier, which is implemented in even the most simple of mixers or sold as outboard units. With a mixer you get other nice things such as a headphone socket, aux sends, inserts, busses, mic inputs, line inputs, phono inputs...

Sounds like you could use a small Behringer or Phonic mixer. I consider them crap, but they are cheap and do excactly what you need. The smallest Behringers go for VERY little money. (MX602 is £55 - it just doesn't get any cheaper).

don't attempt to boost the signal with software only, it'll bring the noise from "pretty bad" to "unacceptable".

Yes, you absolutely need a preamp of some sort. A small mixer as Juppu suggested, or something like a Presonus Blue tube, or an ART Tube MP. You should be able to find these units for less than $100, and if you work on it, more like $50 for a used unit. Any of these options will dramaticaly improve your current situation.
Good luck , RD
