View Full Version : SF apps won't run on new hard drive.

I just installed a new Maxtor hard drive. I cloned my old noisy drive to the new one with the accompanying MaxBlast software. I then removed the old drive. Now the computer boots up fine and everything seems to run ok with the exception of the Sonic Foundry apps which all give me a message stating the program needs to be reinstalled. Is there any way I can avoid reinstalling and reconfiguring? If I used Ghost to clone the drive would these apps run ok?
Thanks for any help you might be to solve this.

When you say you "Cloned" your old drive what exactly did you do? It Sounds like a hidden or system file thing. Yes, using GHOST should resolve this issue.

Is the directory structure EXACTLY like the old drive?
When a program originally installs to, for example, d:/apps/program/program.exe , the same must hold true on your new drive. Windows is stupidly anal in this respect. If adding new drives has changed the drive letters, you need to change them so the program is still on the example D: drive.
(I just moved 5Gb of applications to a new machine and by keeping their place exact on the new secondary drive, they all fired right up with no problem...)
You may just need to go ahead and reinstall all your programs otherwise.

Thanks for your replies. I copied the drive exactly using the Maxtor MaxBlast software. All the partitions were "lettered" the same. Apparently the protection scheme used by Sonic Foundry can detect the differences in hardware. I had to re-register the apps. If anyone has been able to clone a drive with Ghost and get the SF apps to run without re-registering I would appreciate hearing about it. I have since purchased Ghost but have not had the opportunity to use it.

I've used Ghost to image and restore drives with sf apps with no trouble at all.

Thanks, Dick
That's great to know. The guys at Sonic Foundry told me otherwise. That's what they'd like you to believe.
