A couple of days ago, by buddy got a new PC with WinXP. In CD Creator, we made a disc image of a CD I had mastered on my own DAW. Then we copied the image to a new CD-R. When he played the CD-R on his home stereo CD player, he heard no sound, and only had one track.
What could have happened here?

Beetlefan.
If you image a disk, what your doing is making a copy of it in "data" form. I'm sure it's probably a .wav file. A normal CD player cannot play a .wav file so you have to convert first, then burn to a CD-R.
then your golden.
cheers

Actually, the image should have played fine on the new CD. CD's don't contain .wav files unless you have made a data CD and that won't "play" on any CD players at all. Your burning software will convert .wav files (or mp3, etc.) to a format that can be read by a CD player.
Did you use a CD-R or a CD-RW for the new CD? A CD-RW will not play music on a CD player.
You should be able to make an image of a CD and burn that image to a blank CD-r and have it work fine in any player. I would try it again or better still, use your disk copy program to copy the CD to a new CD-R.
Also, is your master CD a CD-RW? It needs to be a CD-R.
CD-RW should only be used for data storage.

We used a standard CD-R! The master was a CD-R. I use nothing else! I have been making CD-Rs for years on the PC and have never seen anything like this!
It's like he burned a data disc instead.
HMmmm....

I had a problem with a CDR I made one time. A friend sings like Sinatra and decided to do some recording using Sinatra Karoake tunes. I ripped them into my computer, recorded him singing over them, mixed and mastered and burned a CD.
The CD would play fine on my computer CD but not anywhere else. This is after I have recorded hundreds of CD's that play fine everywhere.
Turns out the Karoake ripped tunes contain video information also and unless I told the software to save only audio data, I got video and text data in the audio stream. Hence, it would not play on any CD player except the one I recorded it on.
You may want to make sure the original audio data is only audio. You might also try copy to hard disk and then burn to CD.
Other than that, all I can say is enjoy your new coaster!! I have quite a collection myself that I keep next to the pile of hair I have pulled out.

Actually, that's what we (I) did on his machine, made a disc image of my original. He then recorded the image to a new CD-R. We'll get to the bottom of it.

.wav is the standard uncompressed format that evantualy goes to cd's.sure you can put mp3's these days too on a cd.but as a standard globaly and specialy when talking recording and studios etc to keep maximum quality, its .wav format.that is if you are concerned about the quality of the project.
the only time you convert to .wav, when its other than .wav itself for burning on a cd as .wav.
or am i missing something here guys?

TO the original question.it could be a lot of other things.so if you give more details as far as how old the burner and what kind of cd been used etc.
most older burners are not compatable with some of the home cd players etc.it has been a fact in this area.and thats why you get to do a lot of coasters, mostly because of incompatability.sometime even the new ones are problems,so you need to pay attention in to this particular issue.evantualy you have to bounce to stereo and then burn it,and still you are in .wav format eitherway when you are burning.eccept now you are in stereo tracks in .wav.
another thing here,in order to hear the audio in other cd players like home or car what have you,it needs to be finalized.or it will not play in home players etc..i am sure you know that, but if he dosnt, you might want to mention it.as i said the more info, the more it could be pinpointed.it dosnt hurt to mention.
