OK - the workaround is to dump all the tracks assigned to the faulty buss to a single track and assign said track to the master buss - duplicating buss fx and recreate on the new track. A bit of a frig around but anyhoo...

Have you tried creating a new Project? I know it sounds like a lot of work, but sometimes corrupt project files can wreak havoc on the program. Where you also using any effects on this buss that might have eliminated the audio on output?
