pops and crackles in Vegas Audio 2!

Can anyone help out here?
Im able to get one track with no problems, but when I record the second one, It plays back with crackles and pops. I just installed Vegas 2, so I dont know about the tweaks for latency, etc. Can anyone help me with this? Should I be using a different program for multitracking? I'd like to make this work because I work alot in Acid and the two should merge well.

here is my setup:
p3 500mhz
10 and 40 gig hard drive (7200rpm)
Windows 98SE (with ALL the audio tweaks)
Audiophile 24/96 sound card
512 megs of RAM

Make sure you are running the older drivers for your device. I've seen if you use the .27 drivers from M-Audio's site (under the archived drivers listing) that this should take care of your issues. Other suggestions would be to close background programs by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and "End Task" on everything except "Explorer" and "Systray". Make sure DMA is enabled on any hard drives. Also verify you have the latest updated drivers on your other devices in your system (i.e. Video Card, Add-On card). Hope this helps.
