Greetings.

I know I can only open 8 tracks
at once in PT Free. I have no problem with
this except my friend is sending me some
projects made is LE and I will add some bass
and keys to these. I've done it before where
I just opened the first 8 tracks (he left
track 8 free for the bass) of the LE
project and didn't bother with the rest. I
just added bass and sent the bass tracks back
to him.

Since I am going to be adding keys I got to
thinking if there were any way to open tracks
9 and beyond by just deleting the first 8
tracks after rendering them in a basic sub-
mix. I'd like to be able to hear all the
guitars and extra percussion he's recorded
already.

Is this even possible, or do I need to have
him just send me a basic complete mix?
Any suggestions are much appreciated.

thanks in advance

Since he's just going to add what you do for him to his session, he might as well just send you a stereo (or even mono) mix. That would leave you 6 or 7 tracks to fill.

When you fill up all your trks, bounce to disk (mono/splitstereo) & choose Re-import Into Session after Bounce. Then you can delete the source tracks (maybe after Saving Session As..., hmmm?) & drag the bounce file out into a track. Bounced files are time-stamped, so if Region shouldn't begin at session start, switch to Spot mode, click Region with Grabber, click Original Time Stamp button.

Just keep bouncing until you're done. This is a convinient technique for other programs as well... or for programs that eat up a lot of memory when you add more tracks. The only program that doesn't need this is Cool Edit Pro, which creates a stereo submix on the fly, so you can have all 64 tracks without the computer even flinching.
