I've just started to use Pro Tools Free, and I have successfully imported a drum track .wav file (Fruity Loops)...but the problem comes when I try to add another track using an external input.

I plugged my electric guitar into my Yamaha MT4X analog 4-track to use as a mixer and then had the line out go into the "line in" on my computer. This connection is ok because the guitar plays fine through my computer speakers.

HOWEVER, when I select "rec" on the relevant PT clean track, suddenly the guitar sound coming through the speakers has this delay/echoey effect....and when i try to record the drums and guitar merge together in this echo/delay mess that sounds a bit like techno music! when i isolate ("solo") the new track it's clear that the drums have leaked on there and as i said the whole thing's a mess.

Does anyone have any idea how I can solve this?

Thank you

Christian

That problem is known as 'latency'. Means that the input is not fed directly into the output, but is put in the RAM, onto the disk and THEN into the output. Obviously, there is a delay while the computer processes your ingoing signal.

I don't know if your soundcard supports low-latency monitoring, since you don't have the digidesign hardware. Check your soundcards settings out. Also, decrease the hardware buffer size down to minimum. In the Setup > Hardware menu.

the other problem you got probably has to do something with your soundcard. Sounds like good old analogue crosstalk. digital systems do not crosstalk. What's your soundcard? Is its output going to a mixer?
