Its more than a rumor. In 4 days, Digidesign is giving away the 8 track version of Pro Tools, called Pro Tools Free.
You can d/l it from their website. It wont have ALL of the full blown PT features, but it will have most of them!!

Grab it!!

Mikey, I will download it tomorrow!

Tell me, what are the differences with the full version and this one, and what benifits will there be to getting it on disc? I understand that the CD will have all the plug-ins.

I got ProTools Free, I'm putting thru the tests right now. I'm having to read the manual to figure it all out, being a CakeWalk user.
So far I like it! I have been able to install it, record audio & midi with it. I have heard of other people having lots of problems with it. You have to make sure your system meets it's requirements to run it.
The best part is "FREE". The biggest disapointment is no reverb plug in. http://www.audioforums.com/forums/frown.gif

Right..no Reverb, and this makes it quite useless for any real work. Does anyone know if ordinary protools plug-ins will work with this "free" version ?

Or maybe Digi.. just thinks that if people want to use it for anything they have to buy at least their digi001 system..?

AudioSuite plug-ins should work just fine in it. This version did not have RTAS support, though, so no Real Time Audio Suite plug-ins will work.

The 001 is simply an I/O device. It will not add any functionality to the software itself.

DAE Error -6008 is a "not enough memory" error.

128 megs is the minimum memory required for Pro Tools Free. 192 megs is recommended, especially if you plan use other audio or MIDI applications while using Pro Tools Free.

To allocate more memory for Pro Tools Free and DAE (note that you cannot change the memory allocation for Pro Tools win98):

* Quit Pro Tools if it is running.

* Find the applications. (Digidesign > Pro Tools > Pro Tools Free), (System Folder > DAE Folder > DAE).

* Highlight the application and select Get Info from the File menu or hit command I (Cmd-I).

* Select Memory from the Show popup in the info dialog.

* Increase only the Preferred sizes, leave the Minimums at default values. For Pro Tools Free, set the Preferred size between 32000K and 50000K to start. For DAE, between 31000K and 50000K. Sizes will depend on how much system memory is available on the system as well as the size of your session and how many plug-ins you're running.

Sizes can not be changed while applications are running. Check the "About This Computer" dialog under the Apple menu (when you are at the finder level) to make sure that you have at least 10 or more megs available once Pro Tools Free has launched. This is to ensure that your system has enough memory once all of the settings have been adjusted.

If you have less than 128 Megs RAM you are out of luck.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

This error could also mean there is a problem with your sound card - check to make sure it is full duplex capable. PT Free uses the multimedia settings for the soundcard selected in Control Panel/Multimedia & Sounds.
