View Full Version : P4 floating point error...
...this is what i've read in another forum:
"if you are going to use this computer for making music do not buy a pentuim 4..it goes into a denormal mode when it tries to process very small numbers..making it quite useless..you can forget about using most plug ins..athlon is now the chip of choise for music.." maybe an Amd Engineer write this?.. or there's some truth?
Thanx in adv. Tusk.

From what I read there is a more recent P4 update (C1 or something like that) that doesn't have the denormalizing problem. There is also software to get around it at http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2&subItem=6
That said, I recently went from a PIII/866 to an Athlon XP 2400+ and I'm very happy with the major increase in plug-in processing. trock

Does anyone know if this is still an issue with P4's? Or have they since corrected this problem? I ask only because sometime in the new year I'm planning to go with a whole new system with a P4 2.53 Northwood B CPU and RDRam, and I want to ensure that there will be no issues with it. If anyone has any info, please post a reply. TIA! http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif
I am using a P4 1.6a Northwood overclocked to 2.13, and I don't have the denormal problem. I am able to runs piles of plugs and effects and all appears to act normal. Check out our discussions at the SEK'D forum (below) in the Samplitude CPU Hog thread. You will see the numbers and types of plugs that I am running with the P4. There are PILES of people running P4 DAWs.
That being said, after hearing about the performance readings these guys running the Athlons are getting, my next upgrade is likely going to be to AMD.
Cheers
