View Full Version : Inserts w/ Logic
I am on MacOS 9.2.3 using LAP 4.7.3 and my recently acquired MOTU 828. In Logic, i am trying to use a plugin when recording. In the audio mixer the levels respond to the audio, audio plays through, i can adjust the volume, but the inserts do not work at all. They do work when I set them to Master Output, but that does not let me record with them. Any help is greatly appreciated http://www.audioforums.com/forums/smile.gif

I've always been told you cannot record the fx only monitor it.
What would you want to record with the FX anyway?
Well if I am doing hard disk recording how do i use VST effects on what I record? am I missing something here? i am a beginner so it is very possible i am http://www.audioforums.com/forums/wink.gif

Most people would prefer to record without effects and keep the basic recorded track as dry as possible. You may like to monitor the effect as you record (ie add some reverb to make the vocalist feel more comfortable in the headphones, etc).
If you record 'wet' you will be stuck with the recorded effects on your track 'forever', and during the mixdown stage you won't be able to easily get rid of a recorded effect that may not quite be 'right'.
Adding your final effects as plugins during the mixdown stage to dry tracks will give you more ability to change something in small, or large amounts as needed.

What Tailspin said. Although my personal preferrence is to monitor dry in the cans while tracking - forces me to get it right.
Record your tracks dry... I've even begun to record guitar clean and dry as well and add crunch after. Its easier to get a balanced mix 1st.
In Logic, use the aux buses in the mixer window to INSERT the FX you want - fully wet. Then use the aux level control on the CHANNEL to control how much of the wet to mix with the dry... hopoe this makes sense.
Also... you may want to check out www.homerecording.com (http://www.homerecording.com) usefull for beginers.
Hi koma,
There ARE cases, when you might WANT to record your signal with a plug-in applied, for example when recording vocals through a plug-in compressor...
To do it, you should first create an AUX, set its input to your interface's input channel, and set its output to a BUS (or a pair of BUSes, if it's stereo). Then you should choose an audio track, set its input to the same BUS (or pair) and record to that track. I guarantee - the recording will include the plug-in!
Hope it helps

Yaro,
I know that you can do that with ProTools, but I'm not sure you can do it with Logic. I KNOW you cannot do it with Nuendo.

Just WHY would anyone want to record a vocal track (or any track for that matter) with a plugin compressor applied (or any plugin effect applied)..? I see nothing but disadvantages doing this.

Koma: You probably don't want to record a track with a plugin applied as then (as others said) you can never change it. But, a lot of the time i record while monitoring an effect, and if i like it, i'll save the preset, then add the plugin to the track and load the preset (since as you said, you can only monitor effects on the master fx).
But! This can also be changed, you have to change your track to an input track rather than an output track (goto the audio mixer (not track mixer!)) and where is says output 1&2 or whatever, change this to input 1&2 for example. This way you can add effects only to that track/input..
Only problem i've had is actually recording like this, but i'll figure it out oneday.
Good luck
