My system : p2 850mhz / Asus m/board / 256mb/
Windows 98 running Logic Silver 4.0 During playback of a song with audio & midi the program freezes up for no apparent reason. Do I need a bigger processor, more Ram or what? I have only just upgraded to this so can't figure why these problems exist. Am only running 1 effect per Audio track by the way... Any help from more experienced Logic Users out there would be gratefully appreciated!

What sound card are you using?
Does it freeze or give you a message?
How many tracks of Audio?
Are you using the FX as inserts on each track or are you routing sends to AUX channels with FX inserted?

Dear dcwave, I am running audio/midi via a
Hoontech C-Port souncard. I am using no more
than 8 tracks of audio per song. Effects are being run via inserts & then bussed out accordingly. Playback ok for maybe 1-2 mins, then CPU meter goes into red & program freezes. Am using MME drivers from C-PORT. Any thoughts, much appreciated!
Thanks guy,

er p2 850 ??? Never seen that kind of cpu....I guess itīs a p3. Try deleting every startup task using msconfig. If the cpu meter going into red your system is at the end of its cpabilities. Try to to use the effects offline.

Try increasing your record & playback buffer sizes. The "Info Hub" tab above for the instructions for configuring my PC better for digital audio also worked very well. I also went on a mission deleting most of my PC fonts (control panel) and everything else I was comfortable with to increase available HD space.

PS
Having 1 effect per audio track (am assuming these are plug ins) can tax your CPU. Try backing off the plug ins 1 at a time if things might improve; more RAM always helps too.

Have you tried running scandisk and defrag the drive? this is often overlooked. Every great once in a while if my system freezes I am forced to do a warm (ctrl+alt+del) reboot. You should always run scandisk after this. Even after the DOS (blue screen) scandisk runs and Windows loads you should run it again in Windows. This always seems to make my PC more stable. Other causes could be one or more of the plug-ins as well. A lot of them are not written very well and are "buggy". A lot of plug-in user's on the Logic Users Group have reported this.

Your CPU/RAM is fine.
does the audio card come with ASIO/EASI drivers? If so use them. Are they the most up-to-date?
When you say you are using 1 fx per insert... are these compressors?
Set up a buss with the FX then route each channel's send to the buss. This will free up CPU power.
Up date Logic Silver 4 to 4.8.1 ( I know you can get it for LAWP - not sure about LAWS ).
