Input monitoring with realtime effects

In Logic Platinum 4.7.2, whenever i monitor any input and wish to put realtime effects on the instrument, i can only do it by putting the effect in master effects. If i put the effect as an insert to the channel being monitored, the signal goes through unchanged.
Anybody?
