Hi

I need some suggestions for a mobo compatible with:

AMD Athlon (prob XP2000+)
Cubase vst32 (later SL\SX)
Reason
Wavelab
Sound Forge
ReCycle
M-Audio Soundcard

www.sub.co.uk (http://www.sub.co.uk) (red sub) spec their AMD computers with ASUS A7V333 and supposidly has an intelligent order for that won't let you spec incompatible components, it shows no problem when ASUS A7V333 (VIA chipset) and M-Audio cards are selected, yet reading through the post here makes it look like a bad idea.

I have done searches on the forum and can't find any info relevant to the combo I need, so to anyone who can help - Thanks in advance.

-Richard.

Hi Richard,

As far as I've read, the reason Via got such a bad reputation for audio is because of the horrendeous behaviour of the Soundblaster Live with the KT133 chipsets.
I've heard plenty of stories of people using KT133 mobos and having no problems, but just as many saying that they're terrible.
Any problems were fixed by the time the KT333 chipset came out.
The A7V333 is a very respectable choice. It gets recomended a lot in all the forums that I look around in.
The only problem you'd run into would be if you decided to use 2 M-Audio cards under Windows 2000/XP. But... this problem may be cleared up with the next driver release from M-Audio.

Hope this helps! http://www.audioforums.com/forums/wink.gif

Get a board based on the NForce 2 Chipset or SiS 746(when it comes out) on Asus/Abit or MSI and avoid Via completely, especially if your using M-Audio stuff.Get quality DDR(Mushkin/Crucial)and quality PSU(Sparkle/Enermax/Antec)to avoid even further problems. The Asus A7N8X should be out now as we speak(or type?).I could go on and on about Via(even their latest)but I'll save you the Novel.

Thanks tuls, Alan, helpful yet conflicting (as always http://www.audioforums.com/forums/wink.gif) I'll have a look round to see whats being said about NForce.

I been using a asus a7m266 and a a7m266d with a delta 1010.The audio end works great but i seem to be getting crackles when running vsti's and reason synth's with a midi keyboard controller.I tried the c-port 1st and it didnt work with the audio end.so it's really a gamble of what will work with what.

Did someone recommend a chipset that hasn't been released or came out yet? LoL

Stay away from VIA. Use nForce or SiS. Even AMD is safer than VIA though performace is said to be not as good. There *are* poeple with VIA chipsets and no problems, but if you scan through all the Audio/Cubase/whatnot forums, most poeple having problems (including me) with crackles/noise/clicks/plops and stuff do have VIA chipsets (even 333).

have used my Asus A7M266 (AMD76x chipset) for years and recently bought a Soltek DRV4 (VIAKT266A <- mind the 'A'). both work perfect with XP Pro & STaudio products.

To save you time:

Avoid the Via....Avoid Via...

I have a Delta 66/Omni and use to have a Asus a7V (Via 133). While I did manage to record some stuff, it always seemed to revert to making weird noises. I sold the board.

Like any amd user, I've researched hi and low on the issue. If I were to buy right now, I would get amd and a Asus Sis based board, or Nforce based.

My .02 cents.

nForce 2 boards ARE indeed out. Googlegear has the Deluxe Version of the Asus A7N8X for $145. They also have the Athlon 2700 with 333 FSB to go along with the nForce 2 boards for $357.

Thanks for all the replys, I've more or less spec'd my system now which leads to a few more questions which I'm gonna post as a new topic.

Thanks,
-Richard.
