View Full Version : Crash Crash Crash

This has been a rough week.
I have been using the Samplitude demo for a couple months on my computer, a 1.6 Gig P4 using Win 2000 Professional. Until this week, I never had any problems at all, and after falling in love with Samplitude, I ordered a full copy from an on-line vendor last Friday. It's supposed to be on its way now. In the meanwhile, I continue to use the demo version.
A few days after I placed the order to purchase the full version, the demo started crashing on me. And not just a little bit. Each time I start Samp, it works fine for a couple minutes then completely hangs, no matter what I do. I can't even get out of it using the "end task" option on the task manager --- it simply refuses. I can't even shut down or restart the computer --- I have to physically shut it off and reboot. I tried everything --- I even re-installed Windows --- to no avail.
I'm assuming the Samplitude demo is not designed to start hanging as soon as you order the full version. I'm also hoping that the full version will not hang the way the demo does.
Thanks for letting me vent, and here's hoping that things will change when the full version arrives. (Although the pessimist in me keeps telling me that the demo version is the same as the full version except the 90-day clock . . . .)

the full version is unlimited.you must have something else going on.try this even tho i dont think its the problem but try it anyway.
it does that but it does it for a few seconds
not a full 3 minute, but check it anyway.
make sure that your soundcard bit is set in the options department to match the song bit rate.in anotherwords your song's and the soundcard's bits must be the same. you will have such problems.if your souncard for example supports up to 16 bits can't play 24 bit software or vice versa.
well check it out i think you have other issues but wont hurt if you havnt checked it anyway.gl

Diminished,
Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately, it looks like it is not the sample rate. I use a Delta 1010, which handles 24-bit transfers. I have Samplitude set at 24-bit, 44.1 rates, and so is the Delta.
Thanks for your thoughts, and I'll keep searching.
Here's a curious thing. The crashes always seem to occur when I have the transport window open and set in punch in/out mode with the rec mon on. Any reason that would have anything to do with it? Or just a coincidence?

kelly, have you redownloaded the demo?if you havent, redownload it.sometimes it gets corrupted while downloading specially with slow downloads.to tell you the truth i dont know why,but with me samp has never crashed or even a hickup.let us know what happens.
well, you know it could be a lot of things, anyway tell us how many tracks you are playing back and are they all wav etc..
just some tips i guess.disable background apps that are not needed, defrag, enable dma if you have it,well, raise the vip buffer and see it will improve but response time will be slower but works, some tweaks if you havent done any.hope these help u out hopefully.let us know some guys might have the problem will be usefull directly.gl

Is there a clash between hardware (Delta) and software monitoring? I know that if set up incorrectly with Aardvark stuff, my Samp will hang...also, its been said that trying to load the upgrade patches or 3d party plugins into the demo can cause serious problems...

Another much missunderstood "feature" is "Playback while recording with Record Offset (Samples)" - make sure this not checked as its NOT neaded for punch in recording. There have been issues with this and the monitoring functions of various cards including the Delta, and while we're on the subject of offset read this: http://m.armsby.exhome.de/article/offset.html
Another thing to try is renaming al your .INI's in the Sam directory.
(Sam6_E.ini, Sam6_TB.ini) and delete the CDImport.cfg.
This basically resets Sam to the default installation which does mean loosing your settings but who knows - maybe they were wrong somehow or got corrupted.
cheers

Diminished, WireLine, and Martin,
Thank you for your suggestions! I'm at work now, but I'm anxious to get home and try them (I may just be leaving work a little early today . . . .)
Martin, I know that I do usually have "playback while recording with record offset" checked, so hopefully that is my problem.
Thanks again, guys!

That "playback while recording with offset (samples)" sure sounds like the culprit; I've had similar problems, but without such drastic events. I"m curious to hear if that helped.
If it's NOT that, another suggestion would be to uninstall the demo, and start over. Assuming it works again, I'd take careful note of what DOES work, and when it gets flakey.
When I first got the demo, I kept 5.x around, mainly to see if I was going to like 6.0. (Duh!) But I noticed some problems with the demo (little things, mostly stability issues), and uninstalled/reinstalled it at least twice when nothing else would work. That often fixed it. Dunno what file gets corrupted, but I'd guess it's a DLL somewhere.
I keep all my downloads and demos on my "D" drive, in a seperate folder called "EXES" so that anytime I want a clean slate, I can get it back out of that folder and try it again.
The last 2 (and including the current) upgrade/patches seems to work a whole lot better than the demo alone. (And you can't run the patches on the demo, of course without really limiting its features.)
Hope you've found the bug by now!
