Getting ready to upgrade my OS and figure that this would be a good opportunity also to move my SONAR software (EXE, etc.) from the data HD to the system HD, if that would be better. For some reason, when I first set my computer up I put SONAR in its entirety onto the second HD I installed, where I keep all of my audio projects. Should SONAR run from the sys drive and write to the data drive, and if so, why? Thanks. I use a Dell PIII 866 w/ 2 hard drives.

Yes, you'd want to keep your Sonar application on your OS/Apps drive instead and separate that from your audio files when possible. Performance-wise, you shouldn't see much, if not any, difference by putting Sonar on a dedicated drive. For simpler maintenance purposes, I'd put Sonar on C:\ with the rest of the applications. Don't sweat such a minor thing.

Dido,
You want to put your Audio and Project files on your Record drive so if there is a virues or a crash and you cant recover the OS you do not lose all your blood sweat and tears.
Just be sure to delete temporary internet files as often as you can and keep the drives defraged as much as possible for good performance.

The main reason for keeping Application files and Audio files on different disks - not just different partitions on the same disk - is that your heads on the drive can only be in so many places at once. If you have both on the same drive, you are working the system far harder, and this will have a negative impact on your track count and overall performance.
Oh, also as already mentioned, protection against viruses, and if your OS goes west and needs to be reinstalled you won't lose all your Audio files when reformatting the drive.
